Nonmonotonic Causal Logic

چکیده

can be understood to describe everything caused in a world such as I (according to T ). The models of causal theory T are those interpretations for which what is true is exactly what is caused: that is, the interpretations I such that I is the unique model of T I . This fixpoint condition makes the logic nonmonotonic; adding causal rules to T may produce new models. Causal theories allow for convenient formalization of such challenging phenomena as indirect effects of actions (ramifications), implied action preconditions, concurrent interacting effects of actions, and things that change by themselves. These capabilities stem from a robust solution to the frame problem [33]: one can write causal rules

Two-Valued Logic Programs

We define a nonmonotonic formalism that shares some features with three other systems of nonmonotonic reasoning—default logic, logic programming with strong negation, and nonmonotonic causal logic—and study its possibilities as a language for describing actions. 1998 ACM Subject Classification D.1.6 Logic Programming

A Logic For Causal Reasoning

We introduce a logical formalism of irreflexivc causal production relations that possesses both a standard monotonic semantics, and a natural nonmonotonic semantics. The formalism is shown to provide a complete characterization for the causal reasoning behind causal theories from [McCain and Turner, 1997]. It is shown also that any causal relation is reducible to its Horn sub-relation with resp...

Logical Properties of Nonmonotonic Causal Theories and the Action Language C+

The formalism of nonmonotonic causal theories (Giunchiglia, Lee, Lifschitz, McCain, Turner, 2004) provides a general-purpose formalism for nonmonotonic reasoning and knowledge representation, as well as a higher level, special-purpose notation, the action language C+, for specifying and reasoning about the effects of actions and the persistence (‘inertia’) of facts over time. In this paper we i...

A Practical Theory of Nonmonotonic Temporal Modelling

This paper sets out a framework for modelling causal or predictive systems, and is concerned with bridging the gap between the theory and practice of nonmonotonic temporal reasoning. The central result is a nonmonotonic reasoning methodology which subsumes Shoham's chronological ignorance (CI) formalism for causal theories. The new formalism uses an extension of Re-iter's default logic and, unl...

Loop Formulas for Circumscription

Clark’s completion is a simple nonmonotonic formalism and a special case of several nonmonotonic logics. Recently there has been work on extending completion with “loop formulas” so that general cases of nonmonotonic logics such as logic programs (under the answer set semantics) and McCain–Turner causal logic can be characterized by propositional logic in the form of “completion + loop formulas...

Production and Causal Logics for Nonmonotonic Reasoning

We introduce logical formalisms of production and causal inference relations based on input/output logics of [Makinson and van der Torre, 2000]. These inference relations are assigned, however, both standard monotonic semantics, and natural nonmonotonic semantics based on the principle of explanatory closure. The resulting nonmonotonic formalisms will be shown to provide a logical representatio...
